PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Md. Munir Mahmud is an Assistant Professor (currently on study leave) at the Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Geographic Information Science (GIScience) in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Texas State University, USA, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Soe W. Myint.
His research focuses on integrating remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), cloud-based geospatial computing, and spatial statistical modeling to investigate environmental change, natural hazards, and human–environment interactions.
His ongoing doctoral research examines wildfire-generated smoke exposure and associated acute health impacts in California, integrating satellite observations, wildfire datasets, and public health records. His broader research interests include Earth observation foundation models, environmental resilience, climate-related hazards, flood and cyclone risk assessment, urban environmental change, and geospatial applications for disaster risk reduction.
He is also the founder and team lead of the Geospatial Intelligence and Environmental Resilience (GIER) Lab, an academic research initiative promoting collaborative research, geospatial innovation, and student research development.
His research contributions have been recognized through the First Place Poster Award at the 2026 Southwestern Division of the American Association of Geographers (SWAAG) Annual Meeting, the GOLD Poster Award at the 2026 DOE Symposium, and Graduate College Fellowships at Texas State University.
