Professor Md. Munir Hossain Talukder is the current Chair, Department of Philosophy, Jahangirnagar University. He gained his PhD from National University of Singapore, Singapore in philosophy with a thesis on comparative environmental philosophy and ethics under the supervision of Emeritus Professor C.L. Ten (Ten Chin Liew) as a NUS PhD research scholar. One of his PhD thesis examiners was Distinguished Professor Holmes Rolston III of Colorado State University, USA. Dr. Talukder obtained a double degree Masters in Applied Ethics with specialization in bioethics from Linköping University, Sweden and Utrecht University, the Netherlands under the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship of the European Commission. He also achieved an MPhil degree in Philosophy from Jahangirnagar University. He joined the philosophy department as a lecturer in July, 2000.
Dr. Talukder’s research works have appeared in reputed international peer-reviewed journals. He is an Editorial Board Member of Developing World Bioethics Journal (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14718847), and a member of international advisory board of European journal Annals of Philosophy, Social and Human Disciplines (http://www.apshus.usv.ro/). His most recent book is Nature and Life: Essays on Deep Ecology and Applied Ethics, Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, UK, 2018 ( https://www.amazon.com/Nature-Life-Munir-Hossain-Talukder/dp/1527509206 ) . It explores some recent thoughts and trends in environmental philosophy and applied ethics. The topics covered deep ecology, self-realization, virtue ethics, informed consent, multiculturalism, minority rights, etc. He has offered an idea of geo-cultural identity theory in his work.
Since 2000, Dr. Talukder has been engaged in teaching philosophy at Jahangirnagar University. He has taught various courses like Introduction to Ethics, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy and Policy of New Technologies, Social & Political Philosophy, Contemporary Political Philosophy, Research Methodology and its Application, Islam and Ecology, etc. in philosophy department. Currently, he is teaching Ecological Philosophy: Deep Ecology and its Critiques, Classics of Moral Philosophy. He is also regularly supervising Bachelor, Masters, MPhil and PhD researches. As an external member ethicist he is serving in IRB/IECs and as invited visiting faculty in notable institution.
