PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Akter Mahmud is a Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Jahangirnagar Universty, Dhaka, Bangladesh where he has been a faculty member since 2000. Moreover, he served as the General Secretary for two consecutive terms and President of Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) which is a national level organization of Planners in Bangladesh. Mr. Mahmud completed his doctoral degree at Jahangirnagar University, Masters in Spatial Planning from The Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and Bachelor of Urban and Rural Planning from Khulna University. In the last one and half decade he devoted himself in teaching in Bachelor and Master degree programs, the research and publication of articles and books in urban planning. Concurrently, he kept himself busy with the advocacy and civil society movement for gender sensitive planning, public spaces, public transportation, and housing and, above all, planned urbanization of the country.

As consultant of urban planning, he worked for World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), National and International NGOs in various projects. He works as team leader of Public and Private organizations for the planned urbanization of Bangladesh. As trainer, he regularly lectures for professionals working in urban field of public and private organizations in Bangladesh.     

He regularly participates on the TV talk-shows, delivers public lectures and writes for the national dailies on contemporary urban affairs. He was involved as member of Steering Committee for Revision of Bangladesh National Building Code 2015, preparation and review of various plans and planning rules/regulations of the country in local and national level. He is also involved in the plan preparation process of cities and municipalities of Bangladesh. He works with the national and international NGOs, and projects of GoB agencies.
